Fun with virtual machines…

My week in tech

IT - STUDIES

This is a quick update because life is happening.  I set up a few Virtual Box instances so I can work with Ubuntu and Kali Linux. I’m working around the physical limitations of my old laptop. I already upgraded my RAM to the limit of the motherboard so it’s time to save for a new setup. I still want to build a NAS to hold my music library and save space on the new laptop. I will probably keep the old computer on the network and build a physical home lab. I will be looking out for a used switch and a cheap desktop as a server.

While I was able to break the Command Line and Bash comfort zone during the Google IT Support Professional Certificate training, working the Ubuntu virtual instance is actually becoming fun. The virtual environment is also quicker to access because my Ubuntu boot flash drive requires restarts. The Ubuntu boot is also more dangerous if I make a mistake. The virtual Kali instance is fun to play around with ethical hacking. With the virtual environment, I can keep it separate from my network and quarantine anything I break.

With all that in mind, I used this week’s limited study time to work on database setup and management. I also brushed up on programming basics and Active Directories. My study time was limited due to household responsibilities with my focus on our Basement o’ Doom. I replaced the guest bed and worked on cleaning out un-needed “stuff". I've built this website to a stable state with email integration.

With Manchester United pushing along in EPL and Europa League competition, Grand Sumo is releasing the Banzuke or ranking for the May tournament and the World Women’s Curling Championship, I’ll be able to keep my mind from overloading on IT studies.

Until I come up with a tag line, Have a Day.
